Roast chestnuts

Chestnutssssssssss ... warm chestnutssssssss ... Phrase that could be heard in every square and every neighborhood during early winter. The "chestnut seller" in the cold and sharp wind, sat on the edge of the sidewalk and roast chestnuts on the "foufou". This picture can be seen less and less nowadays .

In recent years, sellers in the open air are very few and at specific locations. That kind of roast chestnuts reminds me of my childhood. There was no way to visit centre of Athens with my parents and not buy a bag of chestnuts. I still have this habit. Whenever I see a seller I buy a bag. That bag which is full of the wonderful flavored chestnuts and the sweet taste.

I love chestnuts in all versions. Baked, boiled, even marron glace, I use them in many dishes that I make.

I often enjoy chestnuts roasted in the fireplace ... mmmmmmm

But fireplace is not always handy, we can roast the chestnuts in the oven, I've seen many housewives to do so. It may not have quite the same flavor of roast chestnuts on foufou or in the fireplace, but I assure you it worths the effort.

Ingredients :

  • 1 kg chestnuts
  • 1 ltr water
  • 3 tbsp salt

Preparation :

  1. Wash and dry chestnuts.
  2. With a sharp knife, score them in one side.
  3. Place them in a big bowl filled with the water and salt, for half an hour.
  4. Drain, pat dry and lay them on a baking tray.
  5. Roast in preheated oven at 200C for about 25-30 minutes, stirring them in half the time.
  6. Remove roasted chestnuts from the oven, place them in a bath towel and press them gently to open.
  7. Peel them and enjoy.
